COST OF LIVING
Bringing down the cost of living in Seychelles is the first priority in the SNP’s programme of action. Seychelles can get goods in the shops at the same price as in other countries. A government formed by the SNP will take the following actions to ensure a reduction in the cost of living:
  • Remove GST on food and commodities essential for the family.
  • Ensure that goods are available in the shops all the time.
  • More open competition in commerce
  • Will put into place a tender system for the importation of essential goods.

OUR CURRENCY
We have to make sure that our rupee has sound value and that we can change it in the bank for foreign exchange when we need to.
If we do not achieve this, we will never have a stable economy.

  • Make our rupee convertible
  • A fairer system of distribution of foreign exchange.
  • Earn more foreign exchange.

THE ECONOMY
It will be the task of an SNP government to build an economy that is modern, stable and which makes progress.
With the measures that we will take, we are confident that we will achieve this and bring prosperity for all Seychellois.

  • A sound value for the rupee.
  • Sound economic planning.
  • Favourable conditions for private enterprise.
  • Allow our industries to develop and grow.

TOURISM
We need to earn more from our tourism industry. In the last six years, the number of visitors has continued to drop in spite of all that we hear about five-star hotels.
We must move quickly to remove the obstacles that impede the growth of the tourism industry.
Our future objective is to achieve a 10 per cent growth each year in the number of visitors to our country. The following measures will enable us to achieve this:

  • Double the budget for tourism marketing.
  • Guarantee employment and training for Seychellois in the hotel industry.
  • Fairness in the rules of foreign exchange retention.

HEALTH
It will be our responsibility to ensure that our country provides the health care that people need.

  • A modern and efficient health service centre with visiting health specialists and medicine when you need it.
  • Restore confidence in out health system
  • Give our doctors, nurses and other health care professionals better working conditions to retain their services.

EDUCATION
The Education that our young people get today is what determines our future. We will ensure high standards in education as the base for Seychelles to become a modern country which is an example for our region and the world. We will achieve

  • A more attractive scheme of service for teachers.
  • Appropriate educational programmes and necessary educational materials.
  • Concrete measures to establish and maintain discipline.
  • Schools to have more independence to take decisions.

HOUSING
SNP commits itself to a consistent housing programme which is not based only on political considerations.

  • The construction of at least 500 houses each year, without fail, which will be sold or rented.
  • Expand the land bank scheme.
  • Reinforce laws which define the government’s responsibility for maintenance and repairs public owned state houses.
  • Payments as low as possible.
  • A regular programme of repairs and maintenance for all government-owned rental houses.
  • No political interference in the allocation of houses, which will be handled by an independent board.

SMALL BUSINESS
Our country needs a stable economy which can seize the opportunities for creating employment, earning foreign exchange and increasing the benefits for you. This requires that we open up the opportunities for our industries and businesses, small and large.
The SNP will put in place the following measures.

  • Employment for all Seychellois by reinforcing employment laws.
  • Clear conditions and procedures for licensing applications.
  • A privatisation programme that is clear and transparent. • Government will make available 200 plots of land in our districts and islands for people who want to start small businesses.

AGRICULTURE
Farmers and the agricultural sector have a very important role to play in rebuilding our economy. In addition, we need different types of small businesses to produce as much as possible of what we consume. Small enterprises can help us to reduce imports and even earn foreign exchange. A Government formed by the SNP will increase possibilities for the sector through the following measures:

  • Make land readily available for farming.
  • Open up our islands for economic activities.
  • Ensured access to foreign exchange.
  • Develop industries based on agricultural production.
  • New technology for a modern and productive agriculture.

FISHERIES
Our marine resources are our greatest wealth and we must do more to exploit the possibilities open to us in that sector. In the world today a huge market exists for fresh fish, including tuna. The demand is also growing for a variety of products from marine resources. However, we must also take measures to consolidate the activities we are already engaged in, so as to cope compete successfully with the competition that is growing from other countries in our region.

  • Expand the facilities of Port Victoria.
  • Embark on a programme to create our own fishing fleet.
  • More scope for exports from our fisheries industry.
  • New possibilities exist in aquaculture.
  • Start a programme of social security payments and insurance to cover workers in the sector during periods of low activity.

YOUTH
We offer real opportunity for young people. Our youth want to see that the country as a whole works well and makes progress, so that young people too can have a future.

  • Make facilities available for sports, arts, crafts, music and culture.
  • An education that is of real value.
  • A programme to place all young people in their first job.
